What is Concrete Cancer?

The term Concrete Cancer refers to as the effects experienced when concrete spalling occurs. Concrete provides an alkalytic protection for reinforcement steel, which prevents the corrosion process.  Due to environmental, construction, material or chemical deficiencies in the concrete, cancer or spalling can appear.

When the oxidization of steel occurs the volume of the corroding steel increases, resulting in pressure being placed on the pasivating layer of concrete.  This process can eventually lead to extensive cracking and failure of the concrete to occur.  Spalling concrete is greatly accelerated by the high atmosphericchloride (salt) presence in the Gold Coasts coastal atmosphere.

Correct diagnosis and treatment of spalling concrete is imperative and it is critical for building owners to fully understand the mechanism that is causing the spalling concrete before undertaking any repairs.  Often many repairs of concrete cancer fail due to poor diagnosis and treatment.
